The Wavy Waters of Wawayanda Lake, New Jersey

How I love kayaking! It is one of the activities I find highly enjoyable and easy. It is considered a low-impact activity providing wonderful benefits for your body. And true, kayaking tones your arms, improves your upper body strength and cardiovascular health but also reduces your stress and has wonderful meditative qualities.  In my opinion, a therapeutic aspect of kayaking is most appealing. A true balm for the soul. You get to enjoy gorgeous scenery and nature from a totally different perspective while being far away from everything.  So, get your feet wet…a little. Your body and soul will be grateful.

When I am in the mood for kayaking, I often visit Wawayanda Lake. The forested hills surrounding it provide gorgeous canvas and you get to enjoy not only their greenery, but the small islands and beautiful rock formations. Your lungs will be happy while you get to breath in and breath out tons of fresh air. The lake has an easy access to launch your boat or kayak and there is plenty of parking spaces.

The lake is part of the Wawayanda State Park which is one of my favorite places to visit, all year round. Swimming, fishing, boating, camping, hiking…you can do it all! A web of trails provides lots of fun to both casual and seasoned hikers. You can hike the Appalachian Trail (approximately 20 miles of it!) or you can pick a trail to the South of Wawayanda Lake. There are miles and miles of well-marked trails to enjoy! But wherever you go, beware of furry black bears. YES, there are a lot of them here in this park. This is one of the reasons I trail run here only in the winter when they are hibernating. When they are out playing, I make sure I do not venture in to explore the woods by myself.

NOTE: When a season starts (from Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day weekend), you will have to pay an entrance fee (charged per vehicle).

The quiet charm of Wawayanda appeals to hikers, campers, swimmers and boaters. Forested hills surround Lake Wawayanda creating a restful backdrop for canoeists, boaters and fisherman, while steep mountains challenge casual as well as serious hikers. A twenty-mile stretch of the Appalachian Trail runs through the park, while the top of Wawayanda Mountain offers sensational views. More than sixty miles of trails are marked in the park.
